Pilates for the Core
Curious why Pilates is so hyped? Pilates uses a method called Contrology which is a series of low impact, muscular movements that test and push the limits of endurance. Yes, Pilates is very core centric but it surely does work on overall muscular strength too. One often seeks Pilates as a sure shot method to get rid of unwanted belly fat.
Not only that but Pilates also improves balance, tones the core, improves flexibility and helps correct posture. It can be done with and without equipment.
Starting with a few core exercises for beginners to build a strong foundation for their fitness journey is as follows:
The Hundred - Lay down on the mat, lift both the legs with knees bent, knees 90 degrees to the mat and legs parallel to it. Raise your chest and head off the mat. Work your core. Work your arms 6 to 8 inches up and down off the mat, taking deep breaths, inhaling for 5 counts, exhaling for 5 counts. Repeat 10 times without a break.
Rolling Like A Ball - Bring your knees close to your chest as you sit on the mat. Wrap your arms around your thighs like you are giving it a big bear hug. Now roll on the mat. Roll on to your back resting your head in the mat and come back up in a sitting position with the same force. This will surely make you feel like you are a child again playfully working your back and core muscles! Repeat 5 times.
Single Leg Circles - Lay on the mat, raise one leg while keeping the knee bent. Now move the leg in circular motion keeping it parallel to left shoulder and then to the right, focusing on the core. Repeat 5 times for the same side and then change the leg.
Criss-Cross - Lay on the mat, hands behind your head supporting it, lift it off the mat. Now lift your knees off the mat as well in a table-top position with your knees bent. Now extend each leg in a criss-cross motion.
Saw - Sit up with your legs spread apart on the mat. With your arms extended wide, twist your body to the left. Stretch your right hand towards your left foot and pulse 3 times in the same position. Come back to the centre and twist again. Repeat this 5 times on each side.
